I've been thinking about how many times I've reasoned myself out of doing something because of Meniere's, even though it probably would not agitate symptoms, and would even be good for me.
I've missed out on a lot of good connections with people on the pretense that I "had to to rest."
I know that there are times when it's important to rest, and I know that it's important to do things at my own pace, but it's so easy to take this too far.
In a split second you can go from wanting to eat better, then realizing you have to go to the grocery store to get food first, then bumping in to that "I just don't want to get out of the house right now" lethargy, and then "I'll stay home because I better not overexert myself."
We make excuses to support an emotion. In this example, using Meniere's as a reason for not going to the grocery store makes it ok in my mind to shirk the responsibility of having good food in the house.
It's actually using a health condition to avoid getting better with the the health condition.
It's okay to make excuses, just know what emotion the excuse is being used for. Call it's bluff.
So if you say you want to eat better this year, then your mind goes to the resistance of going grocery shopping and you can feel the excuse coming on - just use the excuse that supports your health, instead of supporting the laziness.
Say, "I really don't want to go to the grocery store right now, so how do I get good food in the house without leaving? Delivery? "
(Here's the positive version of the excuse): "My health is important, and if I don't get food here, I'll eat that slice of pizza in the fridge. Besides, I deserve having food delivered."
It's still an excuse for Meniere's, but now it's working in the favor of your health, and it creates forward movement in a positive habit.
Another positive excuse would be, "I can get in and out from the smoothie store quickly, so I'll go there and get more groceries tomorrow."
It's all about knowing what the excuse is supporting. Is it fear? Or is it your belief and desire to improve?
Food for thought, on the first week after the new year, where it is rubber-on-the-road time for better health and well-being.
