It's not about being right or wrong when you have Meniere's symptoms you're trying to lower.
It's about whether or not what you think and feel is helpful or hurtful to your cause.
They either bring well-being or create stress and anguish.
The process of moving from anxiety and stress into well-being is a process of increasing the amount of positive real estate on your emotional landscape so that you want to live there.
To do that, you've got to take out the garbage. The unhelpful, anguish-producing beliefs that don't serve you.
One of the biggest barriers to this is our minds' tendency to cling to harmful ideas and beliefs because they're "true", or because we're "right".
The more we believe we're right in an argument, the tighter we hold on to the anger.
It's ok to let go of things that aren't helpful to your well-being, even if it looks like you're losing an argument sometimes.
You don't have to battle in those types of arguments that would be a little embarrassing if you were to explain the conflict to a friend. Go ahead and let the other person think they're right.
Treat it like the stress-causing hot potato that it is, and drop it.
There are very rare circumstances where things are 100% true. Most of the time when we think we are in the right, we actually just like our perspective better. It's ok to admit it.
But what's always true: any friction causes you stress, and stress contributes to attacks. Especially if you're still stewing on something days after the event.
You hear people downgrading one truth in honor of a more helpful truth when somebody talks about what they learned about a difficult experience. What it taught them.
But my favorite example of exchanging painful truth for a helpful truth is this quote attributed to Mark Twain:
“I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.”
P.S. You're welcome to take an hour off from the Holiday shopping to sit with us and talk about the truth of lowering stress in an over-active culture.
